Homecoming in the 1940's
During the 1940's, the JCSU Homecoming Queen was crowned by the President of the University on the football field during halftime of the Homecoming contest. Until 1947 this was the responsibility of Dr. Henry Lawrence McCrorey, who had been President for 40 years. Dr. Hardy Liston took over for him the next year, and in the 1950's the coronation of the queen would become a much more important spectacle. Queens of the 1940's included Winona Fletcher (1946), Maben Dixon (1948), and Iris Peebles (1949). Included in this set of photos is the only known photograph of Presidents McCrorey and Liston together.
